last weekend was the beds fita star. it was windy all weekend, enough to stop you shooting a good score. its hard on days like these, dont get me wrong its great to win a shoot like beds but its the big scores that most of need for our ranking or GB selection. on the sunday i scored 1285, not my best score by any means but the 307 i shot at 90m i belive was the best shooting ive ever done in my life. not that 307 is that great but in that wind i feel it was as good as i could shoot and the fact that the best compound was only 3 points better conferms how hard the wind was. to shoot well in the wind you need to keep it fast. wait for it to be as still as it can be and then you have to just shoot the shot as fast as you can, draw up, get on target and exacute the shot. not easy i know but its the only way.

900CX Review!!
Date: 18/12/2007 22:55
Back in 2003 I got my first pair of the new G3 limbs from Hoyt. G3s have gone on to become probably the most popular “top end” limb in the world and the bench mark by which all other limbs are measured.
I have always shot and loved Hoyt limbs and the G3s were in my opinion there best ever, faster than the Vector limb and more stable than the FXs. I have used my G3s to shoot good scores both indoors and out(591 18m Fita and 673 Fita 720) so when I heard Hoyt had a new 900CX limbs coming out and there were meant to be better than the G3s I was very interested if a little sceptical.
At the moment the entire GB snr target men’s team and most of the ladies team shoot Hoyt G3s so the new 900CX limbs have a tuff act to follow.
My new 900CX limbs arrived 2 weeks ago and they look great and feel well finished. I know this does not make them shoot any better but if you pay £320 for a pair of limbs you won’t them to look like a pair of £320 limbs and the 900CXs certainly do. Another novel idea Hoyt have had is to offer the limbs in a choice of two colours, either red style or blue. Another point of note is that the 900CXs were physically lighter than my G3s, both pairs were 46 lb long limbs but the 900CXs just weigh less. This is a good thing as it means the limbs should have a faster response time and have less recoil/vibration when shot.
Now to the shooting……..
I set the 900CXs to the exact same spec as my G3s, 50.2 lbs, 9 inch brace and 2mm tiller. Even though I know the 900CXs and the G3s were set to the same weight I would have sworn the 900Cxs were lighter to draw as they just felt easier to draw, a bit softer. This could have also meant that they were slow so I felt the need for a speed test. As I said before I set the 900CXs up exactly the same as the G3s, the results were a bit of a surprise:
Hoyt G3s = 205 feet per second
Hoyt 900CXs = 209 feet per second
So there we have it, easier to draw and 4 feet per second faster, not a bad combination at all. But I suppose the only thing that really matters is how they shoot i.e. how many points will I score!
I took them out on a cold morning to shoot 70m and I must say I was please with the results. I shot a new personal best straight out of the box, 674 for the FITA 720 round, this is a pb by one point and one point over the current national record, not bad for a first attempt!!
A few of my GB team mates have also had a chance to try them. World Bronze medallist Charlotte Burgess said they were “one of the most stabile and forgiving limbs I have ever shot”.
Former world field champion Jon Shale’s wrote: “Hoyt have always been at the forefront of recurve bow design and they have done it again! The new range topping 900 CX limbs are simply the smoothest and most stable limbs I have ever shot. The 900 CX limbs inspire complete confidence right from the very first shot. It is hard to put into words just how excited I am at the prospect of shooting these limbs in the coming tournament season.” It sounds to me like Jon likes them!
Larry Godfrey, Athens Olympics 4th place, said “the new 900CXs will bring great success in 2008, the new Olympic champion will be using 900CXs! You heard it here first!!!”
One of my old archery pals James Falkard has also speed tested the 900CX against another new limb, the Win & Win Inno’s. The Inno’s are meant to be the “speed limbs” and in James tests they were the quickest, 900CXs 194 fps and the Inno’s were 195 fps, only one foot per second faster. So it seems both limbs are fairly equal on speed so I guess the really test will take place out there on the competition field, who will get Olympic gold……………………….
Michael Peart is an international medallist in both recurve and compound archery and has been on the GB team for over 13 years.
